Venetian Plaster
Venetian Plaster in Geelong, the Surf Coast & Bellarine
Hand-applied mineral surfaces with depth, movement and a finish that responds to light. Lux Cement installs Venetian plaster as a project-specific surface package, from assessment and preparation through to application and compatible protection.
Polished Plaster
Depth developed by hand
Venetian plaster is a decorative plaster finish, often described as polished plaster. In a polished lime and marble system, thin layers are applied and compressed with a steel trowel, then burnished by hand to develop a smooth, luminous surface with marble-like depth. It is a worked mineral surface rather than a uniform painted effect.
The result can carry subtle tonal variation and movement across a wall. The exact composition, sheen and suitability depend on the selected material. We discuss the room, substrate and intended appearance before choosing the preparation and finish, rather than treating every plaster surface as the same system.
End-to-End Service
From substrate to finished surface
The finish begins below the visible surface. Existing coatings, repairs, junctions and movement need consideration before decorative work starts. Preparation and application are selected for your project, with the agreed appearance guiding the final hand-worked layers.
Substrate Assessment
We inspect the existing surface and review its suitability for the proposed plaster. Existing paint or plaster may be retained only where assessment and preparation support that approach.
Preparation & Priming
Repairs and levelling are addressed before application. Loose coatings may need removal, and compatible preparation and primer are selected for the assessed substrate.
Layered Application
Plaster is applied in thin layers using the approach suited to the selected material. Hand-working develops the agreed tone, depth and surface character.
Burnishing
Polished systems are compressed and burnished with steel tools. The working of the surface develops its smoothness and reflectivity; textured alternatives use different tools and techniques.
Protection & Detailing
Where needed, an approved compatible protective finish is selected for the material, location and appearance. Junctions and transitions are considered alongside the decorative surface.

Applications
A considered finish for interior spaces
Feature Walls & Living Areas
A feature wall can introduce mineral depth without relying on a printed pattern. Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and hallways offer opportunities to carry a related finish through adjoining spaces. Discuss the light and desired amount of movement when selecting the surface.
Architectural Details
Columns, ceilings, rangehood surrounds and fireplace features can be considered as part of an interior finish scheme. The substrate, geometry and exposure of each detail still need assessment; a visual reference alone does not establish material suitability.
Commercial Interiors
Decorative mineral finishes can be considered for hospitality, retail and other commercial feature surfaces. Product selection, protection and maintenance should reflect how the space is used, including contact, cleaning and exposure rather than appearance alone.
Bathrooms
Bathroom use requires a project-specific review of the exact material, substrate, water exposure, protection and cleaning. A decorative plaster finish is not a waterproofing membrane. Any required compliant waterproofing is a separate scope for an appropriately licensed waterproofer, with junctions and wider wet-area design resolved before application.
Finish Options
Choose the character, not just the colour
Polished and textured plaster are related decorative options, not interchangeable specifications. Review a physical reference and discuss the intended room before settling on a finish.
Polished Lime & Marble
A smooth mineral surface with subtle movement and translucency. Satin to high-gloss appearances are options within polished systems, subject to the chosen material and application.
Soft Matte Mineral
Fine-grained lime plaster offers a flatter, natural appearance with gentle movement. It is an alternative where a quieter surface is preferred to the reflectivity of polished plaster.
Textured Lime
Directional, layered or organic textures are developed with trowels, floats or sponges. Texture changes the character of the wall and should be considered separately from polished Venetian-style work.
Care Over Time
Follow the guide for your finish
Cleaning and maintenance depend on the exact plaster, protective finish, use and exposure. Follow the current project care guide rather than assuming advice for another mineral surface applies. Contact Lux Cement before introducing an unlisted cleaner, wax or repair method.
There is no universal lifespan or fixed renewal interval for every plaster finish. If the surface is damaged or its appearance changes, arrange an assessment before attempting a repair. Colour, existing protection, damage and material availability all need consideration when deciding the next step.
Common Questions
Venetian plaster FAQ
What is Venetian plaster?
Venetian plaster describes hand-worked decorative plaster traditions associated with depth, movement and luminosity. Composition and suitability vary by product, so confirm the selected material against the substrate and project conditions.
What's the difference between polished and textured lime plaster?
Polished lime plaster (Venetian style) is burnished with steel tools to create a smooth, reflective surface with marble-like depth. Textured lime plaster is worked with trowels, floats or sponges to create organic, directional or layered textures.
Can lime plaster be used in bathrooms and wet areas?
Suitability depends on the exact product, substrate, water exposure, protection, cleaning and wider wet-area design. Decorative finishes do not replace compliant waterproofing membranes.
Can you apply lime plaster over existing paint or plaster?
Existing paint or plaster may be suitable where assessment and preparation support that approach. Loose paint may need to be removed and compatible preparation selected for the substrate.
Is lime plaster resilient over time?
Performance and cracking depend on the selected product, substrate, joints, movement, preparation and exposure. Reinforcement cannot absorb structural movement.
How long does a lime plaster finish last?
There is no universal lifespan. Product, substrate, use, exposure, cleaning and maintenance determine performance over time.
How do you maintain a lime plaster surface?
Follow the current care guide for the exact finish and protection. Contact Lux Cement before using an unlisted cleaner, wax or repair method.
