Overview
A specialist surface system, applied by hand
A microcement bathroom replaces the visual pattern of tiles and grout with a hand-applied mineral finish. Walls, floors, shower bases, niches, vanities and bath surrounds can read as one continuous surface, subject to required joints and junction detailing. Compliant membrane work is a separate scope completed by an appropriately licensed waterproofer before the decorative microcement work. Microcement and its protective finish are not the waterproofing membrane.
Application Process
How we
apply it
A microcement bathroom is built up in thin layers over a suitably prepared and waterproofed substrate. The application sequence is confirmed for the selected system and project conditions.
Substrate Assessment
We inspect the existing substrate — tiles, render, plasterboard, fibre cement or compressed sheet — and confirm structural soundness, falls and fixture locations. Loose tiles, cracked grout and any movement points are identified and addressed before work begins.
Waterproofing (separate scope)
An appropriately licensed waterproofer completes the compliant wet-area membrane work before our decorative system is applied. Microcement and finish coats do not replace the membrane.
Preparation & Reinforcement
Compatible preparation materials and any reinforcement are selected for the assessed substrate, joints, corners, niches and movement conditions. Reinforcement does not replace required joint detailing.
Base Application
The selected base material is hand-applied and prepared between stages in accordance with the current project specification.
Finish Application
The pigmented finish is worked by hand to the agreed texture, tonal movement and appearance shown by the project sample.
Protective Finish
An approved compatible protective finish is selected for the decorative surface, location, water exposure, cleaning and agreed sheen. It protects the finish but is not the waterproofing membrane.
Colour-Matched Caulking
Every junction — wall to floor, vanity to wall, shower screen channels, niche edges, basin rims — is finished with caulking colour-matched to the surface. This is the detail that separates a specialist install from a general one.

Myths & Truths
Setting the record straight
Common misconceptions we hear, and the reality of working with mineral surface systems.
"Microcement is the waterproofing."
It isn't. An appropriately licensed waterproofer completes the compliant membrane as a separate scope. Microcement and its protective finish are decorative surface layers, not the waterproofing membrane.
"It will crack in a shower."
The substrate, junctions and movement conditions must be assessed and detailed before application. Reinforcement cannot absorb or correct structural movement.
"It's hard to keep clean."
Cleaning and maintenance depend on the selected protective finish, water exposure and project care guide. Follow the care guide and confirm cleaners before use.
"You have to demolish your existing bathroom."
Existing tiles, render or sheeted walls may be retained where assessment, preparation and the selected system support that approach.
"It looks like raw concrete."
Microcement can read as polished stone, soft chalk, suede, raw concrete or limewash — entirely down to colour, texture work and sheen level. We sample on site so you see the exact look before we commit.
"It will yellow over time."
Colour and appearance over time depend on the selected product, protection, exposure, cleaning and maintenance. Confirm current product information for the project.
